Shireen Abu Akleh

1971 - 2022

By: Serin Sarsour | Date Added:

The ongoing conflict between Palestine and Israel has heavily impacted the lives of many for decades, especially those who have died in the wake of violence. Shireen Abu Akleh is one of the victims of this violence. Abu Akleh was a Palestinian-American journalist who made a name for herself as a reporter for Al Jazeera, an Arabic-language news channel. She followed and reported on the conflict in Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories throughout her 25-year career, making her one of the most renowned people in the Middle East. Unfortunately for her, being in the spotlight and doing what she loved put a target on her back. The journalist was murdered in May of 2022 by Israeli forces while she was reporting live from the occupied West Bank about a military raid occurring on the Jenin refugee camp. The 51-year-old’s death sent Palestinians all across the globe into an uproar. Abu Akleh was one of the few voices that many Palestinians relied on to cover and raise awareness on what is and has been happening in the Palestinian territories and communities since Israel was declared a state in 1948. She even inspired other Palestinians to seek any outlet to speak out about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, whether that be utilizing social media or even starting their own blogs. Abu Akleh may be gone, but she will never leave the hearts of the Palestinian people, nor will she ever be forgotten.
