Colonel Stephanie Dawson is the first female brigade commander in New York National Guard history. Stephanie Dawson took command of the 369th Sustainment Brigade, known was the Harlem Hellfighters because of its remarkable service during World War I, on November 16, 2008. The Harlem Hellfighters trace their origins back to the 15th Infantry Regiment of the New York National Guard, created in 1916 as an all African-American unit. Dawson took over the 369th Sustainment Brigade from the previous commander, Colonel Kevin McKiernan. Prior to taking command of the 369th Sustainment Brigade, Dawson also served as commander of the 27th Rear Operations Center that deployed to Iraq in 2003. Dawson’s squadron was one of the first New York National Guard units that deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003. In 2001, Dawson served as Executive Officer for the 369th Corps Support Battalion when the unit was activated during 9-11. Dawson led security, supply, transportation, and other logistics support missions for initial Ground Zero operations.  Prior to her retirement in July of 2011, Dawson had 32 years of dedicated service to the United States Army. For her service, Dawson has received numerous awards including Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal and The Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal. After her retirement, Dawson worked for the Chief Operating Officer for the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey where she is Assistant Director of Operations.
