Angelina Jolie

1982 - Today

By: Genan Ismail | Date Added:

In 2001, Angelina Jolie became Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). She has gone on many field missions in order to meet with refugees and internally displaced people and advocate on their behalf. Jolie also became noted for travelling to war zones like the Syrian-Iraqi border during the Second Gulf War, Sudan's Darfur region, as well as Kabul during the Afghan War. She hopes to raise "awareness of the plight of these people" and believes that refugees "should be commended for what they have survived, not looked down upon." On April 2012, she was promoted to the rank of special envoy to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
