Hester Bateman

1708 - 1794

Date Added:

Englishwoman Hester Bateman inherited a silversmith business when her husband died in 1760. This was a time when women entrepreneurs were frowned upon. She created her own "mark" and went on to design and produce household silver for decades. She ran the business successfully for 30 years before retiring. Pieces she designed and produced are highly valued because of the quality and design.
