Anne Morrissy Merick opened doors for women journalists. First, as the first woman to serve as the sports editor at the Cornell Daily Sun, she crashed the press box at the Yale Bowl, becoming the first woman permitted to cover a sporting event from the press box at Yale. More importantly, when working for ABC News in Vietnam in 1967 she challenged, and overturned, the Army edict that banned female journalists from staying on the battlefield, overnight.
